Fear — The Alarm Your Body
Never Learned To Switch Off

You're not anxious because something is wrong with you. You're anxious because something inside you is still trying to keep you safe.

There is a moment — and I think you know the one — where you feel it before you can explain it. The tightening in your chest. The jaw that clenches without you choosing it. The sense that something is wrong even when everything, on paper, is fine.

I used to call that anxiety. I used to think it meant something was broken in me.

It didn't. And it doesn't mean that in you either.

Fear is not the enemy. I know that sounds strange — when fear has shaped so much of how you move through the world, when it has woken you at 3am, when it has kept your shoulders lifted to your ears since before you can remember — it is hard to hear fear described as anything other than the problem.

But fear is not the problem. Fear is the alarm.

Fear is your nervous system's way of saying: pay attention. Something here matters. Stay alert.

It is one of the most sophisticated protection systems in the human body. And it has been working exactly as designed.

The issue is not that it activates. The issue is that it never learned when it was safe to stop.

When fear activates — when the alarm sounds — your body has four ways it learned to answer. Freeze. Fight. Flight. Fawn. These are not choices. They are automatic responses your nervous system developed, usually very early, based on what it learned about how to stay safe in your particular world.

The woman who shuts down when things get hard. The woman who reacts before she can choose. The woman who stays busy to avoid feeling. The woman who makes herself small to keep others comfortable. These are not personality flaws. These are fear's four survival strategies — working exactly as your nervous system designed them.

Fear is not who you are.
Fear is the alarm your body learned to run
when the world felt too unpredictable
to feel safe in.

For most of my life, fear ran everything.

Not in a dramatic way — not in a way that was obvious to anyone watching. From the outside I looked fine. Capable. Together. But underneath all of it my nervous system was scanning constantly. Bracing. Preparing for whatever was coming next.

I didn't know that was what was happening. I just thought I was anxious. I just thought that was how I was built.

And then, after my breakdown in 2022 — after the tests came back clear and the doctor said the pain was stress, that my body was speaking what my mind refused to acknowledge — I began to understand that fear had been running a programme inside me for decades. One I had never consciously chosen. One I had inherited, absorbed, and carried without ever being given the chance to question it.

Fear connects everything.

The overthinking is fear scanning for danger. The shutdown is fear making you invisible. The rage is fear building armour. The people pleasing is fear keeping the peace at any cost.

Once you understand fear as the root — not as a character flaw, not as something broken in you, but as an alarm your nervous system learned to run — the patterns that have shaped your life begin to make a different kind of sense.

The question is not how to get rid of fear. Fear is not something to be eliminated — it is something to be understood. To be befriended. To be listened to differently.

When you understand which survival response fear has been triggering in you — when you can name the pattern, see where it came from, understand what it was trying to protect — something shifts. The alarm doesn't disappear overnight. But it begins to lose some of its grip. Because you are no longer inside it without knowing it.

You are looking at it. And that changes everything.
